Boy Is Always Mistaken For A Girl. 2 Years Later, Friend Decides To Take Action
Tyler Boone, 10, and Gabby Ruiz, 12, have been best friends for years--ever since they were toddlers. Even though they now live hundreds of miles apart, they've stayed in touch and have kept up their friendship.
When Gabby was four, she was diagnosed with a condition called alopecia areata. It causes people to lose their hair. It starts out with small circular patches, then eventually spreads to the entire scalp. Sometimes it impacts body hair, too.
Gabby has undergone several different treatments, but they were each unsuccessful. It has been heartbreaking for her and those who love and support her. Tyler also felt helpless and unsure what to do for his friend.
But then an idea popped into his head. He set a goal to grow his hair out, then would cut 12 inches off so Gabby could then have a wig made from his hair. In fact, he ended up growing his hair so long for her that people sometimes mistook him for a girl. Tyler told ABC News that he just let the comments roll right off of him, knowing that what he was doing would be helping his good friend.
So before the New Year arrived, Tyler and Gabby went together to a photography studio where they were photographed--Tyler showing off his long hair and Gabby measuring it with a ruler. Tyler told ABC News that his goal has been to help his best bud.
"I'm cutting my hair so I can give it to Gabby. I just want to make her happy."
Then, on Dec. 29, 2016, it happened. Gabby chopped off Tyler's hair with a pair of scissors. The photographer captured it all on camera. Gabby, who is a bit shy, was grateful.
After they were done with the photo shoot and slicing off Tyler's hair, Tyler spent 30 minutes with a hair stylist having the rest of his hair trimmed up. He now sports a stylish buzz cut, which he just couldn't believe after spending two years growing his hair out.
"It feels so different."

The friends ushered in the new year with a new look for Tyler while Gabby awaits her wig that's being made by the nonprofit group Children With Hair Loss. How selfless and incredible was Tyler's gesture to Gabby?
