For what it's worth, wars have been a somber part of human history since the beginning. And yet, each life lost in defending our territory and principles, is always one too many to bear!
Kansas native Marine Cpl. Richard Bennet was only 25-years-old when the helicopter he was in crashed into a lake in the Anbar province of Iraq. For family and friends who were left mourning Richard's loss, words couldn't describe their sense of grief - especially given how young he was.
While most of us feel that there aren't enough words to thank the fallen American heroes like Richard, who have given their lives so we can enjoy our freedoms, there are still people out there who believe they have reasons to feel otherwise...
Westboro Baptist Church is a recognized hate organization that has been in the news for being a radically evangelical extremist group, known especially for their hate speeches against several groups including Muslims, Jews, and LGBT.
Richard had been an openly homosexual individual. So when the plans for a proper marine's funeral were announced by the Bennet family, Westboro Baptist Church didn't take long to make it known that they would actively protest the funeral procession. Their reason being that they believed Richard's death was a punishment from God for being a homosexual, and not an honorable sacrifice made for his country!
The Bennet family was certainly worried about just what this hate organization was going to do at their son's funeral. But, proving that there is more good than bad in the world, a silver lining came in the form of the Patriots Guard biker group who was more than ready to defend Richard's sacrifice as a marine.
Ken Van, a member of the Patriots Guard and a pastor himself, had this powerful message to share:
"No family should have to face this type of hatred on the day that they're putting their loved ones to rest. Bennet died defending our sacred freedoms, and he even died to give the fringe members of the Westboro Baptist Church the right to picket his own funeral, but just because they have the right to speak doesn't mean we have to listen."
And so, in an already emotional and moving funeral procession, you can see the members of the Patriot's Guard, holding American flags and forming a human fence against the protesting Westboro Baptist Church.
Here is the must watch video showing the Guards at the funeral!
Marine Cpl. Richard Bennet, is a true American hero. His sexual orientation does not lessen the sacrifice he made for his country! And while, the Bennet family might not truly get over his loss, they will know that friends and strangers alike think that their son should be honored for defending the freedoms of this great country.
The Patriots Guards are an amazing group of bikers who not only shared in the solidarity of a family's loss, but also decided that proper respect included standing up against the hate group and reminding the rest of us that good will always prevail!
